Cherokee is an Iroquoian language spoken by about ten thousand people living in northeastern Oklahoma (USA), and by another thousand or so living in western North Carolina. Cherokee writing is the creation of Sequoyah, one of the great names in American Indian history. The syllabary which he devised between 1809 and 1821 is still considered one of the most impressive works of linguistic analysis and invention, and has remained in use to this day. The 85-character syllabary differs from an alphabetic system in that it symbolizes each syllable, rather than each sound, in the language.

LaserCherokee for Windows

TrueType® and Type 1 hinted Cherokee fonts. Includes Keyboard Switcher with convenient syllabic phonetic input. The font also includes Times®-style English characters. Simply choose the CherokeeLS font from the font menu and select the CherokeeLS keyboard layout from the Windows Language Bar or Language Indicator Button. Switch instantly between English and Cherokee by pressing the hotkey. Logical, syllabary-style input allows the user to type the phonetic English syllabary to produce the characters. (The Setup Manual guides you through installation and setup of the keyboard layout.)

The fonts install into Microsoft® Windows XP, 2000, NT, Me, 98, or 95 and work with all Windows XP-, 2000-, NT-, Me-, 98-, and 95-compatible applications that allow the user to select fonts from a font menu. (A custom version compatible with Windows 3.1 is available by request.) The Type 1 fonts require Adobe Type Manager® in Windows Me/98/95. The product includes a Setup Manual, a User's Manual, keyboard layout chart(s), and Character Code Tables showing every character in the font(s). (All documentation is in PDF format, and requires Adobe Reader to view/print.) The included Keyboard Switcher (keyboard driver) allows access to four characters per key (instead of the normal two) and alternate keyboard layouts. The fonts alone (without Keyboard Switcher) will install into Linux, but Linux users must provide alternate keyboard input for characters in the extended character set. These fonts will print to any printer at the highest quality allowed by your printer.
